Getting a new puppy is always a fun time for a family. Puppies are so fun and adorable that everyone loves them. They quickly become part of the family and everyone loves the playing, the curiosity and the sweet cuddliness but nobody enjoys it when they do their duty in the house. Puppy potty training is probably the most difficult and likely the only real difficulty that goes with owning a new puppy but if you are going to be a happy dog owner you will need to know that your puppy house training is efficiently done.
The most important thing to remember and to be wary of is that your puppy is still just a baby. He does not yet have the comprehension level to control his elimination habits or to realize what you are wanting him to do when you tell him to go potty. You will need to have patience and work with him closely for a few weeks before he has the ability to alert you when it is time to go out and to control his bladder and other functions.
At the beginning you may need to take your puppy out as much as 2 to 3 times in an hour. That may sound like a lot but a tiny puppy does not yet comprehend how to control himself and the active playing that most puppies engage in creates urine. Nighttime may be better as a resting puppy will not need to go out as often. Do not wake a sleeping puppy just to go outside but rather just make sure and take him out as soon as possible after he wakes up.
Consistency is the most important part of puppy house training. Be consistent in taking him out on his leash to the same place every time. Be consistent about using the same commands such as “potty now” every time. And be consistent with your abundant praise and special treats when he does finally go.
After your puppy finishes his elimination chore reward him with lavish praise and treats. Try to make the puppy house training practice as positive as as you can for your puppy. If you are impatient or mean to your puppy as he is acquiring this knowledge of puppy house training your efforts will take more time as he will become afraid and will not know what is demanded of him.
Using a crate will assist you in your puppy house training when have to leave your puppy at home. Dogs naturally try to keep their own space clean so a crate will help your puppy to learn how to control himself. Dogs are also natural den animals so they like having a small home of their own.
Consistency is the most crucial part of puppy house training. Make sure that you use a consistent command and take him to the same place every outing so that there is no confusion on his part. Having a positive experience will also help him to learn faster and you will be done with your puppy house training sooner.
It should take just a few short weeks to complete your puppy house training. Doing it right will serve you for the whole time that you own your dog so be consistent and positive and you will be able to have many happy years with your new puppy.
